Job Stress Index 2018

The stress indicators for employed persons collected by Health Promotion Switzerland show the following:

  • Stress: Around every fourth person in employment (27.1 %; 2016: 25.4 %, 2015: 22.5 %) has stress, i.e. more stress than resources at the workplace.

  • Exhaustion: The proportion of emotionally exhausted people tends towards 30%.

  • Loss of productivity: Stress costs employers around CHF 6.5 billion per year.

  • Age: Younger workers are more likely to have an unfavourable relationship between stress and resources.

  • Gender: The differences between women and men are marginal.

  • Education: Higher education tends to be accompanied by fewer burdens and more resources.

More resilience less stress and burnout symptoms

Numerous studies show that promoting resilience supports employees in their stress management strategies. Raising managers' awareness of their own resilience and that of their employees makes a significant contribution to an efficient and healthy working environment. A resilient corporate culture has a positive influence on the company's productivity, the employees' willingness to innovate and their identification with their common future.

Study by the Bertelsmannstiftung (2013) examined the relationship between leadership, resilience and health. The results of the study give a strong indication that there is a significant correlation between the degree of resilience of a person and the occurrence of burnout symptoms and psychosomatic complaints.

 

People with well-developed resilience report a significantly higher sense of performance, are less emotionally exhausted and tend to show fewer psychosomatic symptoms than people with lower resilience.

A further study with employees (A. Patzelt 2015) shows that the more resilience the individual employee has, the fewer stress symptoms are present. Promoting resilience can make a significant contribution to helping employees cope better with stress.
